Today I’m highlighting one of my all time retro faves. Gopher for the Atari 2600. What? A game about an old farmer, 3 carrots, and a ravenous gopher? Yes, thats precisely what I’m talking about. It may not be for everybody, but in this gamer’s opinion, it’s one of the most fun games for the system.

Here’s the gist:
You’re an angry farmer. Your angry because the gopher that lives underground repeatedly surfaces to steal the carrots you’ve worked so hard to grow. You use your handy shovel to smash in the gophers tunnel, or simply bash the gopher on the head.

Should the gopher successfully steal one of your carrots, don’t worry – you’ve got three. If you start running low, look out for the bird that drops (poops?) carrot seeds. If you’re skillful, you can catch a seed and plant with your shovel.

It’s actually fun.

It may not look like much, but this is a great example of a game designer doing a lot with what was available. The gameplay in Gopher is creative and entertaining. It especially get’s fun as you get better, and are good enough to bonk the goper on the head when he surfaces, or catch and plant carrot seeds. It may not hold your interest for hours, but there are few Atari games that will – and this is a prime example of great Atari gameplay that’s still fun today.

Do you still need a 2600? I have some extras. Maybe we can do a trade or something…

Ya I still need to get my hands on one but don’t know what I would have to trade if anything lol. Also sucks that I am stationed in Alaska in the Air Force so shipping is a little higher. But I’m willing to listen lol.
